National Career Development Month

People always ask what you do for a living, but sometimes it’s a good question to ask yourself. You dedicate a lot of time to your 9 to 5 (8 hours, to be exact), so you might as well do something you enjoy. As luck would have it, November is National Career Development Month, so there’s no better time than the present to start thinking about your future.

You may or may not know that there’s actually a National Career Development Association (NCDA) that puts on this dedication to employment once a year, helping people look to the future and work toward their goals. There are a few things you should consider when it comes to plotting your career path. Here’s a quick checklist to keep in mind:

  • Think about what excites and energizes you. Doing something you’re passionate about makes work feel like play.
  • Keep your strengths in mind. Maybe there isn’t any one thing you’re passionate about – that’s fine! Take a tally of your skills and use those as a jumping off point to find a career that fits your talents.
  • Take a test. If you know your strengths, but aren’t sure how to apply them, try taking a test that matches your personality to occupations that might suit you.
  • Make a career plan. Once you feel like you have a goal in mind, the best thing to do is sketch out an idea of how to achieve it. You don’t have to follow it exactly, but having an idea of your next steps will help you moving forward.
